What Others Are Saying...

John Orie

Former student, friend

"There are some serendipitous people who enter your life at exactly the right moment—and for me, that was Dr. Gabby Yearwood. As an educator, Dr. Yearwood created a classroom where authenticity was not only welcomed, but celebrated. He unwaveringly approaches and leans into topics that most folks steer away from to avoid controversy—that ability to stay in the conversation is a testimony to his thoughtfulness, care, and deep awareness of the lived experiences behind any academic theories. As a human, Dr. Yearwood leads with empathy and integrity. He shows up consistently and with a genuine compassion that has left an unforgettable impact on me. He makes a space for me to be honest, reflect deeply, be seen in my truth, and feel grounded when things are uncertain. For this and so much more, I will always be grateful."

"Having an educator like Dr. Yearwood in my college years was so integral to my growth as a human being and now as a physician. He helped me address my own unconscious biases on matters of identity relating to sports, race, gender, medicine and science; always gently guiding me to think outside of the status quo or the comfort realm of what society believes and thereby wants everyone to believe. Through his didactics and stories, I've been empowered to think and learn and teach outside of the box. As an anthropology major in college, I created a chess to life resiliency training program for under-resourced school children in Pittsburgh and created a music video with 2K+ views. Now as an internal medicine physician, I am drawn to advocacy projects and recently studied and gave a capstone presentation on how physicians could address the healthcare gaps for formerly incarcerated returning citizens. Dr. Yearwood is one of those educators that stays committed to his students and becomes a lifelong mentor and friend. Another classmate of mine and I still catch up with Dr. Yearwood regularly on life updates given the changing medical and political climates around us and those conversations are often the anchoring points of tumultuous weeks; a reminder that there is still goodness in the world, that good people are still fighting for justice, and that we are all in this together."

Mentee, friend, former student

“I've had the privilege of knowing Dr. Gabby Yearwood for eight years — beginning as an undergraduate student in his Introduction to Anthropology course at the University of Pittsburgh. Gabby is an exceptional educator with deep expertise in his field and a gift for creating an inclusive, engaging, and safe classroom environment. As a Candadian-Trinidadian, he approaches conversations with a global citizen mindset; keeping his pulse on current events and prioritizing continued education. Over time, our relationship has grown into one of mentorship and genuine friendship. As a mentor, Gabby has guided me through personal and professional crossroads, always encouraging me to stay true to what matters most. He is a genuinely caring individual driven by a steadfast commitment to making a meaningful and lasting impact in the world. Gabby has undeniably made a lasting impact on my life and would be an asset who brings value, presence, and wisdom in every room he steps foot in."
